How to plan a rotating shift schedule
Updated 17 October 2026
Turn a repeating work pattern into a calendar you can actually use.
Start with the full cycle
Write down your complete pattern, including days off. Two mornings, two evenings, two nights and two days off is an eight-day cycle, not a weekly timetable. Pick a known first day so the sequence stays aligned.
Keep exceptions visible
A swap, holiday or extra shift does not always change the whole rotation. Add an exception for that date and check whether your employer has changed only that shift or the underlying pattern.
Check overnight dates
A 22:00–06:00 shift starts on one date and ends on the next. Keep the start date and end time together, and check the handover against your employer’s roster. The end time also matters when you plan travel and the next day.
Bring the plan into ShiftMoon
Use a repeating rotation or reusable shift templates, then add individual changes as needed. The calendar gives you a personal overview; your employer’s published roster remains the official source.
